Take the guilt out of making time for you

Mind.org.uk says that for positive mental well-being you should ‘Take time for yourself’, that ‘at times you may feel guilty for spending time on yourself, but it's essential for your well-being and can help you to be more resilient.’

The NHS even express that "No-one can give well-being to you. It's you who has to take action," according to Professor Stewart-Brown.

As people living modern lives, we spend so much time chasing productivity and refusing to take proper breaks. We shame ourselves for sleeping in and put off activities like long walks and quiet reading. If we ever do have any time away from our daily grind, we are subconsciously aware that there are things we should be doing, which taints our experience with guilt as we feel we are wasting time. But wasting time is fantastically useful. It is a moment on pause, where we are able to re-energise and cleanse our minds.

Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul, says, "We seem to have a complex about busyness in our culture.” We make out that there is always something that needs doing and always someone else who needs our attention.

If no one is around, we automatically reach for our phone, laptop, TV remote, or even the cleaning appliances. We actively avoid ourselves. Being always focused on external stimulation, we are disconnected and missing opportunities for inner growth.

May Sarton describes our quiet moments as "open time, with no obligations except toward the inner world and what is going on there." That is exactly what we need sometimes- to breathe, re-charge, re-connect, and keep going with our lives.

We spend hundreds of pounds on outfits for occasions that we will probably only wear once, we spend hours of our lives rushing around buying this and sorting that and meeting with this person and calling that one. What do we invest in ourselves and our well-being?
